If you are familiar with the quote, then you know exactly what movie I am going to talk about. Yes, it’s the Matrix :). The movie that keeps being repeated on TV stations for more than ten years.
Have you noticed one strange thing about it? That some people never seem to get bored of watching it, no matter how often it appears on their TV screen. To me the first one is good, the second one is okay, but the third one is a big disappointment. It puts me off watching it; how a respectable character like Morpheus let himself being ordered around by a tiny woman I will never know. Feminist claptrap had to be inserted somewhere I suppose, so we know what to expect.
One unusual thing about this movie is how people responded to its messages. I remember back then when it was released there was a radio show where people were debating what actually the Matrix is. Same thing happened on MTV, the host walked around the streets interviewing people about the Matrix and gave away a Nokia phone similar to the one that was used by Keanu Reeves in one of the scenes. What was going on?
It didn’t stop there. The internet started to flood with discussion boards about the Matrix, Matrix chatrooms, groups, plus Matrix wallpapers and screensavers – the things that we can still see until today. I even read a book written by someone who studied religion about it. I couldn’t believe the enormous impact this movie gave to some of us it made them look as if they were talking in their sleep.
I admit it can be fascinating to sit and work out the messages – the red pill and the blue pill – and other things uttered by the characters. But don’t forget it is supposed to be an entertainment. It wouldn’t be wise to let ourselves being dragged by some fictional characters and live by their words.
Welcome to the real world.
